During a subsea integrity inspection of a 24-inch transmission pipeline, NWE identified a pressurized 2-inch breach at 20 meters depth. The finding explains the recent pressure drop in the municipal water supply system.
The inspection confirmed that previously repaired segments near the shoreline were intact. However, a critical leak was located 30 meters from the far bank at 20 meters depth, with visible pressurized discharge. Sharp rocks near the line were also identified, posing long-term threats to coating and structural integrity.
Recommendations:
NWE recommends urgent repair using a pressure-rated clamp, installation of protective measures such as concrete mattresses or rock shielding, and routine monitoring with ROV and hydro-environmental risk reviews.
